Announcing our 2015 Youth of the Year

Look out for information about our 2016 Youth of the Year event to take place in January 2016.

“I am a Club kid who loves her life because the Boys & Girls Club exists.”  – Diana Meza, Youth of the Year competition speech

We serve hundreds of students in our San Pedro, Wilmington and Port of L.A. Club high school centers, but every year we choose one of our most accomplished teens to serve as our youth representative. On January 21, Diana Meza of our Wilmington Clubhouse was selected as our 2015 Youth of the Year and is now preparing to participate at the Los Angeles County Youth of the Year competition in March at the El Capitan Theatre.

Diana is a Banning High School senior, an active community service member in our Keystone leadership group and is on her school’s cheer team. She maintains high grades in addition to working on weekends to help her family.

This year, our Youth of the Year competition and event committee was chaired by Board VP Rosa Pesenti. USC Senior Associate Athletic Director Steve Lopes served as keynote speaker and shared his journey from his position as an offensive lineman at Linfield College to becoming the Chief Operating Officer of USC Athletics.

Diana competed against Marlyn Angeles of our Port of L.A. Clubhouse and Brianna Moss of our San Pedro Clubhouse. Marlyn has attended our Club for over a decade and grew up in the Rancho San Pedro community. She is attending Harbor Teacher Prep to graduate with her high school diploma and AA degree. Brianna will graduate from her homeschooling program this year at the age of 16. She is already earning college credit through our College Bound program and is a developing musician in our Arts Academy.
